Florence Nightingale (May 12, 1820 – August 13, 1910) - Pioneering nurse, writer, and noted statistician. Nicknamed “The Lady with the Lamp” because she would stay late and administer help to the soldiers in the medical ward holding only her lamp. Became famous when the mortality rate at the military hospital fell from 60% at her arrival to 2% six months later during the Crimean War. She died in her sleep at the age of 90. (more…)
